CHANGE, TECHNOLOGY, TEXTING & HOW EVERYTHING EVENTUALLY RELATES TO WORKERS' COMP IN MY WORLD

I was thinking the other day about how things have changed over the years from a technology standpoint.  I’ve done pretty well at keeping up with things here at work (because change is always good and makes life easier, right?).  Just look at me, I’m blogging!

At home, it’s a different story.  Life at home has always been “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”.  I still have analog TVs and probably will until they die OR I die, whichever comes first!  I finally received a cell phone this year because 1) it was paid for, 2) it was forced into the palm of my hand and 3) what if there’s an emergency in 2010 that I maybe haven’t already had to face in the past half century, BC (Before Cell).  Do I know how to use it?  Sure do!  I learned just the other day that if I want to use it, it needs to be charged once in a while.

Now everyone is making a big deal about texting.  I attempted to see if I could do this on my cell phone (after charging it).  It was a no go.  In order to learn more about “texting”, of course, I Googled.  If you had told me 20 years ago that I would be spending time googling at this point in my life, I would have laughed and said “maybe in 50 years”. Funny, you never know what you don’t know, until you know.  I now know that googling is a great way to learn about things without having to ask my kids!

Well, I still haven’t learned how to text message but did find an interesting page called NetLingo full of thousands of abbreviations, acronyms and initials that are used as a form of “short hand” for texting.  Many of these caused me to blush, some caused me to duck for cover, but many will be useful if and when I ever learn the mechanics of actually launching a text.

Funny how things always come full circle and end up back here in workers’ comp world.  For years, we’ve had a little cheat sheet here we call “Alphabet Soup”.  This has always been a great tool to give to employers to help share our lingo.  There’s nothing worse than telling an employer that we’ve noticed the IW has been on TT for 90 days, so we’ve referred to BWC CSS to set up an EOD IME and hear dead silence on the other end of the phone followed by “what did you just say?” J

I spent a little bit of time today updating the Alphabet Soup document with common abbreviations, initializations and forms that we use regularly on the employer side of this business.  The document can be found under the Shared Documents Tab on OMA Groups or by clicking here "Alphabet Soup".
